Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and MANN+HUMMEL can look back on a development and supplier relationship spanning many years. Following on from the Jeep Renegade, the Jeep Compass (C-SUV) is the latest vehicle to be fitted with a compact and robust air cleaner system from MANN+HUMMEL.
According to FCA, four-wheel drive models with the Trail Rated® badge have mastered the toughest roads while meeting demanding requirements for traction, wading ability, maneuverability, articulation and ground clearance. The new Jeep Compass, the latest model of the SUV family from FCA, has also earned the right to wear this badge. As in the Renegade, a compact air cleaner with an anti-snow system ensures that the off-roader is also able to easily handle extreme weather conditions.
MANN+HUMMEL developed the air cleaner system especially for the Jeep Renegade (B‑SUV) with the requirement for a modular system able to adapt to other vehicles and engines. Therefore, in the Jeep Compass, special attention was given to the adaptation of the dirty air duct which varies depending on the engine version and the respectively used resonator. The volume of the resonator is adjusted accordingly to the frequencies to be dampened. The newly designed dirty air duct is therefore equipped with a standard connection for the resonators with different sizes and is highly variable.
The requirement for a compact air cleaner system was fulfilled by MANN+HUMMEL through use of a rectangular radial seal. With this solution the air cleaner housing can be realized without a single screw on one side. This enables tight installation of the component at the edge of the engine compartment, which saves valuable installation space and facilitates servicing.
In order to ensure reliability in all weather conditions, the off-roader is equipped with an air cleaner including an automatic anti-snow system. For this purpose, a part volume of the lower housing is separated from the main volume by a wall. In this area, two mushroom valves are fitted. A non-woven material on the lower side of the filter element acts as a seal between the smaller and larger volume in the housing. When the filter medium is clogged with snow, the mushroom valves in the small snow-protected volume open through negative pressure of the engine and ensure a supply of air.
Counting up the different B- and C‑SUV models in the four different regions (EMEA, LATAM, NAFTA and APAC) the complete vehicle family comprises eleven models. MANN+HUMMEL produces the air cleaner systems in each region and supplies locally. The versatility and variability of the products and their availability worldwide provide many advantages for FCA and makes MANN+HUMMEL a reliable partner and preferred automotive supplier.
