Customer: Suzuki Motor Corporation, Japan. Development and design: Shanghai, China. Production: Sonneberg, Germany, and Chongqing, China. Delivery destinations: Hungary, China, Japan and India. Our intake manifolds for Suzuki are created with the support of the MANN+HUMMEL global network.
MANN+HUMMEL developed the intake manifolds for the Suzuki 1.4 liter 4‑cylinder and 1.0 liter 3‑cylinder gasoline engines at the company‘s engineering center in Shanghai. Inspite of different types of engine architecture, the local Asian development team was successfully able to coordinate the design for the two intake manifolds to enable the use of common parts. For example, both variants are able to use identical cylinder head gaskets. A technical highlight is the newly designed welding seam. Hereby the burst pressure of the intake manifolds could be increased significantly. Chinese project manager Xiaoyun Shen explains that the intake manifolds are a good example of intelligent variant management: ‘Our local development ensures that we are able to offer products which are in line with the market according to the motto ‘just meet customer needs’.’
The intake manifolds are based on two molded shells which are joined using vibration welding. Cold and warm press-fitted inserts provide interfaces to other aggregates. Connection points for mounting the air cleaner are integrated in the intake manifolds together with a discharge point for the tank ventilation and a vacuum extraction point.
The injection-molded parts are not produced exclusively at the plant in Chongqing, China. The MANN+HUMMEL plant in Sonneberg, Germany, supplies Magyar Suzuki production location at Esztergom, Hungary. Suzuki Motor Corporation and MANN+HUMMEL have worked intensively together as partners for many years. The results are convincing products made possible by the global development and production network of MANN+HUMMEL.
