MANN+HUMMEL: Sustainability report 2024

At MANN+HUMMEL, we believe that sustainability is about more than just ambition – it means taking responsibility for shaping the world around us.

Director Global Corporate Social Responsibility

Statement of the Board of Management on sustainability

Kurk Wilks (CEO) & Emese Weissenbacher (EVP & CFO)

Filtration is much more than a technical solution; it is a key technology for a sustainable future. Whether it’s cleaner air, cleaner water, cleaner mobility, cleaner industry, or resource-efficient production, our solutions actively contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Our responsibility goes beyond our products. In a dynamic world, adaptability is essential—for our technologies, our processes, and our organization. Through digitalization, sustainable action, and agility, MANN+HUMMEL continuously puts its customers at the center of progress.

As a signatory to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), we are fully committed to its 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor standards, environmental protection, and anti-corruption. Sustainability is an integral part of our strategy.

In 2024, we reduced our carbon footprint by 9% — despite a slight decline in sales. A recycling rate of 97% in the Transportation division and the lowest accident downtime since we began recording these numbers are further proof of the effectiveness of our measures.

With our revised management policy, we are setting new standards, including commitments to climate neutrality, product safety, and human rights. The German Supply Chain Act (LkSG) and transparent supply chains are central components of our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) approach.

We are also preparing intensively for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and other regulatory requirements. Together with the increasing number of new ESG regulations worldwide, this marks a change towards more transparency and comparability.

This requires not only professional expertise but also entrepreneurial agility to both adapt processes and structures flexibly and communicate our sustainability performance in a credible, measurable way.

For us, sustainability is a continuous learning and development process. With every solution and every filter, we contribute to a better future.

We would like to thank all our employees, partners, and friends who have shaped this path with their commitment and conviction.

MANN+HUMMEL is also providing information on its strategies and progress in the area of corporate responsibility for the 2024 fiscal year in the form of a sustainability report. This report was prepared in accordance with the GRI standards for the 2024 fiscal year and also serves as the progress report in accordance with the UN Global Compact (CoP). We highlight the focus areas of our corporate responsibility in four areas: “Our value creation,” “Our environment,” “Our employees,” and “Our governance.”

Performance and responsibility for a sustainable future

We ensure that sustainability is part of every product by combining performance with purpose to create lasting value for our customers and our planet.

In 2024, we developed an innovative product made from renewable raw materials. To give an idea of the potential impact: based on figures from 2024, a saving of 3.93 tons of CO₂ and more than 4,500 liters of crude oil could be realized by our CO₂-reduced air filter (such as the MANN-FILTER C 17 237 air filter), which is impregnated with plant-based raw materials and packaged in recycled material.

The potential to make combustion engine vehicles, which will continue to dominate the aftermarket for the years to come, more sustainable is enormous. If, for example, the materials used in oil, fuel, air, or cabin filters were replaced with more sustainable alternatives across 35 selected filter products with a sale of 860,000 units, CO₂ emissions could be reduced by 30% and crude oil use by 35% – saving around 125,000 tons of CO₂ and 46,000 liters of oil annually. That is equivalent to the energy consumption of 91,000 average households

Our filtration solutions help customers have a positive environmental impact:

  • For example, at Heathrow Airport, we advanced sustainability efforts and ensured optimal air quality, protecting 75,000 employees and 20 million passengers annually from harmful particulate matter, viruses, bacteria, and other airborne pollutants.

  • For example, at a university in Scotland, we ensured optimal protection against air pollutants in approximately 300 buildings, resulting in annual savings of around £179,000 and 170 tons CO₂, reducing energy consumption by approximately 813,000 kWh per year.

We develop innovative solutions for the filtration of particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide to improve outdoor air quality.

Responsibility in production

We transform the way we produce to make our processes more responsible and resource-efficient – paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Our technologies help to improve air and water quality, thereby contributing to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 6 (Clean Water).

A focus on improving machine safety and adopting a safety-first mindset has led to a 29% drop in accident rates since 2020, resulting in our lowest ever recorded accident rate.

Sustainability Strategy - our understanding

We have a clear understanding of our Corporate Social Responsibility.
  • As leader in Filtration, we enable our customers to be more sustainable.
  • As a company, we are active contributor and we take responsibility for our business, our employees, our value chain and our planet.
  • We have the intention to promote company actions in harmony to our business interest as well as regulations.

In addition to behavioral changes in the use of resources and a fundamental rethinking of product design, production, operation, and recycling, we at MANN+HUMMEL are using technology to make our world more sustainable and cleaner.

As a world-leading filtration company, we focus on filtration with the aim of separating the useful from the harmful. We develop solutions that enable cleaner mobility, air and water and deliver key technologies that pave the way to a cleaner planet.

The CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) is a non-profit organization that operates an international system for the disclosure of environmental data. Companies and public institutions report on their environmental impact, such as greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption.

The CDP rating evaluates companies on the basis of several criteria contained in the CDP questionnaires on climate change and water security.

A CDP score provides a snapshot of a company’s disclosure and environmental performance. Bold environmental action must begin with an accurate, transparent assessment of environmental impact and progress, which CDP scoring makes possible.
